WILL KARACHI’S INFRASTRUCTURE EVER IMPROVE?
Last year, as we all know, Karachi was drowned in rain because of heavy rain. Monsoon season is enjoyed all over the world but because of Karachi’s infrastructure, residents of Karachi always have to face unbelievable torment. Aside from the fact that they cannot enjoy the rain, they have to face several other problems that are constant for them, like electricity breakdowns, several road accidents, people get electrocuted to death, many lose their lives in ambulances because of the terrific traffic jams, houses drown in water and one cannot you help it unless the government sends their teams to pipe the water out or maybe if the sun is ready to help. No electricity means you have to survive the intense humidity. Every year the season brings a lot of misery for the residents more than delight.
Sight from the previous year
Last year alone 41 people lost their lives. An operation of anti-encroachment was started by KMC to clear the soft and hard encroachment alongside the stream to widen the watercourses, as well as to clean the streams. Mainly the task of this operation was to tackle the three main courses of Karachi, Orangi, Mehmoodabad, and Gujjar courses. Residents in these areas were asked to leave because of the operation. Quick actions were taken at the moment. Complaints too were submitted in Sindh High Court against the bodies that were involved in the operation for not delivering on time. But as with any other operation, this too is showing no visible progress.
The most recent rain came in August 2020, and it was the most rain in a single day in that year. Residents of DHA also had major issues, they lost a large number of their belongings, and water was trapped in their homes for some time due to the severe rain, which was not dealt with as part of a longer plan. People assume that DHA is a luxurious suburb of Karachi, putting aside the underdeveloped neighborhoods. They believe that these places get far more benefits than the others, yet they are mistaken.
The issue was taken to the streets by DHA residents, who staged a protest against the DHA body, which was successful in drawing attention to the matter on social media. In response, the DHA filed an FIR against the protestors, residents filed a case with the SHC against the DHA board, and the attention was diverted away from the fundamental issue.
After the August 2020 Monsoon season, the court continued to consider the complaint brought against DHA and CBC for failing to provide relief to victims and clean up the area's built along the courses. People complained to the government and demanded that their taxes be held accountable. These cases are still being heard, but no solution has been established.

Anticipated rainy days plans:
However, the rainy season is likely to return during June and July, as it does every year. This reveals a lot about citizens' expectations of their government. People on this subject frequently argue that Karachi is Pakistan's top taxpayer city and that this is not the kind of service citizens deserve. In September 2020, Imran Khan unveiled an Rs1.1 trillion reform plan for Karachi, which aims to address the city's chronic municipal and infrastructure issues.
In the rainy season, the lives of Karachi people have no value in the eyes of the authorities. Their indifference must be called out, but on the contrary, individuals are preferring to go to locations where such issues do not exist. Now that people have options in the city, they can take advantage of superior infrastructure, 24-hour working authority, places where your investment property is valued, and, most importantly, where your complaints and problems are addressed.
