The Malir Expressway primarily connects two different areas Starting from KPT Interchange near Qayuomabad which is nearest to Defense Housing Authority Phase-VIII and ends at Super Highway M9 motorway at 40km near DHA Phase-IX.

According to the reports, a six-lane dualized expressway was proposed that goes along the left bank (now changed to right bank) that “starts from KPT Interchange near Qayoumabad and ending at Super Highway (M9) at 40km near DHA phase-IX”. The estimated cost of this project would be Rs 42 billion.

In an interview Mr. Qureshi, a DHA administrator said that

“We have a system where the owners will pay non-utilization charges.”

Bahria Town, ASF City, and other societies

The other societies that will benefit from the express motorway would be Bahria Town and Airport Security Forces, ARY Laguna, which are the known projects on the M9 motorway. The Malir Expressway travels around 40Km of distance from the KPT interchange.

Three underpasses would link Bahria Town and the M9 motorway, and the motorway connects the Malir Expressway, making it a fruitful development for the residents of Bahria Town. As stated on the official site:

“8 km long, the projects include 3 underpasses, multiple slip roads, access roads, service roads, part of M9 that passes through the interchange, an extension of an existing bridge, construction of a new bridge and a causeway”

Malir Expressway 2021: Background

As the city expands, the need for Malir Expressway was sought. The increase in regular traffic in Karachi is increasing the traffic hazards and inconveniences like wastage of fuel, environmental pollution such as noise, smoke, visual and psychological issues, cognitive distractions, etc., and ultimately the worst of all the circumstances, accidents.

The Karachi city contains two seaports, as heavy traffic is generated for the carrying of oil and supply of other imported goods, or carrying the goods for exports to the port. The Heavy traffic pressure on the National Highway N-5 and Superhighway M9.

Thus, the local Government Department and Sindh Government decided to provide the shortest route that connects the center of the city to the Superhighway. In December 2020, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari inaugurated the expressway.

 

This project was opened for residents however people were skeptical about this project but this doubt was not reflected in the numbers, as the project was supposedly attracted 3 billion Rupees worth of investment while 25,000 plots were sold.

The details here are updated as much as the government of Sindh has briefed about the project after the change in route. The project would include or change some aspect of Malir Expressway after its relocation to the other side of the bank (right side) of the Malir River. Therefore the information may change as the developments are made and press briefings are released in the light of changes in Malir Expressway.

As per the report, the salient features:

• Project Length is estimated to be 40 km on the Right Bank of the Malir River
• Facility Type is proposed to be Access Controlled High-Speed Toll Expressway
• Typical Cross - Section is stated as a 6-Lane with 3m side Shoulders dual carriageway and 7.9m raised central median, for future expansion
• Design Speed 100km per hour
• Mode of Financing PPP Equity Mode
• Design & Construction Period 36 Months
• Concession Period 25 + 3 Years

So, are there any Interchanges on M9? The current established Interchanges on Malir Expressway are as follows:

• 1. Korangi – Shah Faisal Colony Road
• 3. Shahrah-e-Faisal/N5 near Quaidabad
• 4. At a suitable location between km 20 to 24
• 5. At a suitable location between km 25 to 30
• 7. At endpoint i.e. M9 (to be remodeled for Expressway requirement)

Talking about some facts, the project entails the following stats:

• Number Flyovers would be 3.
• The number of Other Bridges would be 5
• The number of Underpasses is designed to be 8
• The number of Cattle Creeps are expected to be 8
• The number of Culvers is 22
• The number of Weigh Bridges would likely be 6.
• The number of Toll Plaza is reported to be 2.

Malir Expressway New Route: Danger Averted?

The Government changed its plans early this year in 2021 and proposed a new route that is supposedly on the other side of the bank. However, the structure and the route might change as a new survey is being done on account to save 4 to 5 billion Rupees. The Sindh Government would be compensating to the displaced families, markets, agricultural lands that were En route of the expressway. Now the route has changed to the right bank of the Malir River.

Bureaucrat Niaz said,

“The Sindh government would compensate the residents of Gulshan-e-Maryam,”

Conclusion

The Malir Expressway is a new venture that would help the residence of Karachi travel to the outskirts easily. The travel time would be reduced to few minutes. The only problem is the people, property, and other assets lying there in the way. The Government made plans to improve the structure without affecting the residence. We believe moving the Motorway towards the other side is much better for the residence.
